I will talk about this movie in a different perspective as I am a spiritualistic person who believes our soul never dies.
The character of Mrs. Mills is very interesting to me. At first I thought she had gone to the house to set them free from their illusion, as a spirit with more awareness. Later on, I started to think that maybe the three servants were spirits just a little bit more acquainted with their new situation as souls without a carnal body.
The character of Grace was quite dramatic but reminds me of souls that are not aware of their new condition, and that at the same time are very much attached to their religious beliefs ... beliefs that usually bring a lot of trouble for them, as it did for Grace, to accept a new condition. Grace started to awake for a new sort of life she was having after killing herself and her children. The movie did not seem to care much about this idea of homicide and suicide, or maybe one of the consequences would be having them locked inside the house for a certain time. Who knows?
The character of Anne is quite interesting as she is the only one in the group that starts to see things a little more clearly, in spite of being a child ... Anne was quite helpful in the whole process of awakening and readapting as a soul.
One thing that was not clear to me was the light thing, the allergy. Why would Grace think her children could not see and enjoy the light around them? It seems that she tried once but was not successful. Also, this idea of being in the dark, the lack of natural light ... how could they follow a better path if they had to be kept in the darkness? We usually see good guidance through the light.
I liked this idea of different places with different vibrational frequencies so even Grace being a soul without a body but she could not see the incarnated souls around her, in the house ... so we understand she was a soul not exactly in tune with her surroundings.
When Mrs. Mills declares that house meant a lot to them, I can recall the number of souls that in many ways come close to live with us, and stay with us, without the idea that life together is not good for both deceased and non-deceased souls. They need help to find their right dimension.
Unfortunately the character of the medium was not highlighted as it should, for experienced mediuns are able to help clarify the mind of those souls in a state of denial due to their own beliefs and way of thinking.
The view of life after death is so complex for some souls due to their own beliefs that in order to help them understand what is going on, we need to break strong paradigms to try to make their new life less worse and confusing. Mediums play a very important role in the process.
Poor Victor who could just see them, but due to his age and lack of experience would do nothing to help. We do hope children who get in touch with disembodied spirits open their minds for something new in life in different dimensions.
Charles was a character that was absolutely lost in space and time which brings us the idea that when we change life dimensional plans our minds are able to deceive us completely.
I didn't see this movie as a horror movie at all, although the story itself is very dramatic ... the gothic thing is there, but it depicts the moment of transition from one reality into another for the soul who is not aware of what might be happening after life. God bless that nowadays we have a lot more information on that.
